3D Marble Atom Model

on January 15, 2013

Today in class, the 5th graders worked on creating three dimensional models of atoms in the classroom.  Given the atomic number and atomic mass, students were able to find the correct number of electrons, protons, and neutrons.   Students can’t wait to try out some chemistry experiments after working on three different atomic models.

We discussed adavantages of the two models created in class:

advantages to drawing on paper:

easy to see

shows you really understand an atom

only draw the electrons

not distracted by colors and marbles

advantage of making a model with marbles:

easy to fix mistakes

more realistic – there are protons and neutrons

easy to visualize and manipulate

easier to see the pattern

great colors

Next we will try acting out an ATOM ! !
