Calling all Planets !

on February 6, 2013

4th grade students discussed the differences between the inner planets and outer planets.  Students looked at all the different trends as they compared the planets.  Eventhough pluto has been demoted to dwarf planet status, the class discussed the reasons for the recent change in status

inner planets – few moons, iron / nickel core, smaller size, warmer temperatures, atmosphere with heavy gases

outer planets – more moons, stronger gravity, rocky core, colder temperatures, Hydrogen and Helium gases

At the end of the day, my fourth grade students went out to the turf field to make a scale model of the solar system.

Students were surprised at how close the inner planets were.   Some of the outer planets felt lonely on the other side of the field.  One student suggested we have the planets orbit around the field next time!
