A Watched Pot Never Boils

on March 5, 2013

4th grade students challenged the notion that a “watched pot never boils.” For the second chemistry experiment, we recorded the temperature of ice water on a beaker until it boiled for over five minutes. Many students were curious about the bubbles in the heated beaker in the first experiment.  Students wondered what salt would do if you put it into the boiling water.  We recorded the temperature change of regular water and the temperature change of salt water.  For the next class period, we will be creating graphs to try to understand the phase change of water.

We promised the high school chemistry teacher, Mrs. Norquist,  that everyone would know the difference between a beaker and graduated cylinder.  I think we are close to getting there after the second lab!
