600 Million Years and Counting

on March 7, 2013

Shipley Lower School students helped to create a 40 foot geological timeline on the bulletin board outside the science classroom.  We needed all the space we could get to cover over 600 million years of living history of both plants and animals.  Students used ancient creature cards to draw a sketch of each of the extinct creatures on the timeline.  We put them in the correct era (precambrian, paleozoic, mesozoic, and cenozoic) and the correct period. (like silurian and devonian)   Today in class we took our creature cards and found where the animals fell on the timeline.  Students had some interesting observations of the evolutionary process.

ancient creatures first started in the sea
animals came on land to be safe from predators
archeopteryx looks like a cross between a dinosaur and bird
archeopteryx looks a lot like Harry Potter’s horntailed dragon
archeopteryx is part dragon and part bird
the earth is old.  How long did earth exist without living things?
