3rd Grade Crystals a Big Hit

3rd grade students really wanted to make their own crystals this year.   I was amazed by the popularity of the project.  All my fourth and fifth grade students have been admiring the student projects this week.  They wanted to make their own crystals, too.   The pipe cleaners have tiny bristles that help to form the borax crystals in the supersaturated solution.  We had to boil water to allow more space between the water molecules so more borax dissolved in the liquid.  When the liquid solution of borax and water cooled, the crystals came out of the solution.  Students compared the different size crystals sizes and looked at them under the microscope.
