Food Web Models – Cyclic Causality

on October 9, 2013

5th grade students played a second ecology game today that showed a cyclic model.   The game was a version of “go fish” where the books you earned were complete cycles of the matter traveling from plant to decomposer and then back to plant.  Although the game was not as competitive and exciting as the first ecology game, students began to understand the differences between the two different models of a food chain.

Cyclic Model represents Matter

(atoms of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen moving through the food web)

Domino Model represents Energy

(the sun’s energy is converted to chemical energy and heat energy as it travels to the decomposers)
