Mystery Solved! It’s a Darkling Beetle

on October 17, 2013

photo 1 photo 2Today our second graders had a bid surprise in their mealworm project. Students have been recording measurements and behavior of their meal worm the last few weeks. Mealworms have been changing into the Pupa stage of development in the recent weeks.  Many students debated whether the animal was still alive or dead.  The new shape of the mealworm pupa had large eyes, legs, and what looks like wings.  Some of our students predicted it may turn into another insect.  The class was not sure what insect the mealworm would become.  We got an exciting surprise today when we found the first beetle crawling around in a student’s cup.
