Growing Shadows in the Snow

on December 11, 2013

Today, the second graders measured the December shadow and found that the shadows have been growing each month this fall as we approach winter break.  We have been measuring the same shadow at the exact same time and same tree for the past four months.  The class discussed how the Winter Solstice is approaching on December 21st, when we will have the shortest day of the year.   The Shadows have been growing each day this fall as we approach the Winter Break.   What a great excuse to get our coats on and go out into the snow today and enjoy the spectacular winter scenery of our campus.   Inside the classroom, we created a bar graph in our notebook that showed the increase of shadow lengths over the past four months.  Students wondered what would happen to the shadow in the month of January.
