Making Borax Crystals

on December 17, 2013

The third grade science students were able to make Borax crystals in class.  We boiled the water to make more spaces between the water molecules so plenty of Borax crystals could dissolve in solution.   When the solution cooled, the water molecules came closer together and some of the borax came out of solution forming crystals.   We made lots of shapes using different colored pipe cleaners.  Some of the designs are perfect to place on a Christmas tree or place hanging in front of a window.  We looked at the crystal shapes under the microscope the next day in science class, while snowflakes crystals were falling down from the sky at the end of the day on Tuesday.   What a great activity to do before our winter break.
