Making Chemistry Foam Gnomes, Aliens, and Monsters

Our work in science class harnessed the winter break energy that has been taking over the building this week.  4th graders have done a number of experiments focused on different physical changes.  Today we focused on a spectacular chemical reaction in science.  We added to liquids called polyA and polyB and stirred them in a cup 100 times.   The bottom of the cup became very hot (since it was an exothermic reaction) and a foam began to rise in the cup.  We used a craft stick to help guide the foam upwards.   Students had lots of creative ways to decorate their polyurethane foam into foam gnomes, monsters, and aliens.
