Ballon Rocket Races – Newton’s 3rd Law

on January 31, 2014

The fourth grade classes are studying topics in astronomy during the next month.  We attached balloons to a straw with tape and allowed the air to push the balloon like a rocket across the room on 5 meters of string. The race illustrates Newton’s 3rd Law.   We found lots of variables helped to make the balloon fly faster and straighter.

some of the variables that helped the speed included:

medium sized balloon rather than blowing it up as big as it can get

small amounts of tape evenly put on the ballon for less spinning

holding the string tight with more tension

making sure the end of the balloon (force of rocket) was parallel to the straight line of the string.
