Designing your own Petroglyph Replica

on February 25, 2014

2nd graders this week have been working hard testing the durability of different rocks and man made materials.  They want to find the right material to make their own replica of a petroglyph I showed them in the class.  Students are acting like material engineers and evaluating the good and bad qualities of each material.  We will test the materials and eventually make our own petroglyph.  We testing the materials using a nail and sandpaper to find the hardness and durability of each material.   Some of the materials we tested included granite, marble, alabaster, limestone, pumice, wax, and foam.   Students wore goggles because of the dust that came off from some of the materials.
