Designing the Cafeteria Courtyard Space

on September 29, 2014

4th grade students are using design thinking to find ways to better use the cafeteria space.  We first compared the central courtyard space to the lower cafeteria courtyard behind the fourth grade.  We surveyed different students and teachers to ask questions about how each group used the space and explored possible ways the space could be improved and changed in the future.   We examined the soil after a rain and found the soil in the lower courtyard was much different in color and composition than soil in the higher part of the courtyard.  Students are now exploring projects and ideas generated from our survey of the courtyard. One group would like to explore ways to generate compost in this space using scraps of food from the nearby cafeteria.  Another group is working on designing a rain garden to collect the water runoff and decrease erosion in the space.  The third group will examine what plants will grow best in this wet and shady environment.
