Chemistry is Cool

on December 20, 2014

Fourth Grade Students have been working in the lab as scientists investigating both physical and chemical changes in the past month.  Some of the investigations included:

filtering a mixture of sand and salt

seeing if more salt fits in warm or cold water (solubility)

graphing the phase change of ice -> water -> gas

watching a washer jump

(physical)

making a foam gnome

watching the reaction between potassium permanganate and glycerin (fire)

(chemical)

students made observations about all these changes and came up with a clear and understandable definition of both a physical and chemical change.

when you observe a physical change, it can go back to the start

when you observe a chemical change, it can NOT go back
