Creating a Double Loop Coaster

2nd grade students learned a lot about forces, motion, and problem solving in this engaging lab.  Student had  to use a 6 foot insulation tube, masking tape, a plastic cup, and marble to make a working roller coaster.  Students first found a way to build a successful track using 1 hill.  With this confidence all student found a way to make both a single loop and double loop that kept the marble on the track. Students in the lab showed determination, perseverance, and creative problem solving. We discuss the importance of gravity, friction, kinetic energy, and potential energy in the design. The energy in the class was contagious!
