active adventures in lower school science

About me

This Blog has been created by Dan Del Duca.  I have been a science teacher in independent schools for over 20 years.  I am now teaching lower school science at The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA for grades 2 – 5.   I feel that students learn best by active experiences in the classroom.  This fall our students planted gardens on campus and made predictions for the spring bloom.   We have established an outdoor composter by the cafeteria and we are keeping a worm bin composter in the classroom.  The third grade class set up a bird feeder outside my classroom to learn how to identify the different birds in the local region.  My classes include lessons in a spiral curriculum that includes studies in life sciences, chemistry, earth science, and the physical sciences.  I want my students to develop their thinking skills in my classes and develop a passion for life-long learning.

My wife and I live with my 10 year old twins in nearby Ardmore, PA.  We spend some time every summer in Maine, traveling to the Moosehead Lake and Sugarloaf region of western Maine.   When I am not busy teaching, I like to spend time going on adventures with my family.   Some of my favorite activities include hiking, biking, reading, and playing tennis.
